Sealing performance is the property of the packaging bags to prevent the entry of other substances or the escape of the contents. For flexible packaging that needs to have sealing performance, the packaging materials used shall not have any defects such as pinholes, cracks, unsealed and unsealed at the seal that affect the sealing performance.

The word “compound” in flexible industry actually means “lamination”. That is to bind films of different properties together in a certain way, and sealed, so that to protect the content. The laminated structure of flexible packaging can be divided into many categories according to different combinations, so we cannot use only one system to describe different structures. However, the structures of conventional flexible packaging are often distinguished by its outer layer, middle layer, adhesive layer, inner layer. Typical three - layer composite structure is as shown in picture 1-1.

Gas resistance, also known as gas permeability, according to the definition of the Chinese standard GB*T1038-200- "The gas permeability test method - differential pressure method of plastic film and sheet", gas transmittance refers to the gas volume through unit area of the sample in the unit time under a constant temperature and unit pressure difference. They are expressed as value of volume at standard temperature and pressure with unit of :cm3*m2·d·Pa. For the quality assurance in food circulation, gas resistance mainly refers to the ability to prevent O₂, CO₂ and N₂ through the food packaging during circulation.

The packaging of consumed foods can be divided into convenient food, puffed food, pastries & biscuit, dairy product & baked goods, candy & preserved fruit, meat product, pre-made food, roasted nuts, frozen food,health care, grain & oil, sauce, wine & beverage, tea & instant drink etc.

According to the pouch type, the pre-made pouch commonly includes Stand-up pouch, Stand-up Spout pouch, Stand-up zipper pouch, 3 side seal pouch, Flat bottom zipper pouch(8 side seal), Pillow pouch, BIB(Bag in Box), shape spout pouch etc. If classified by application, it mainly includes dry food pouch, vacuum pouch, liquid pouch and retort pouch etc. 

Due to the diversity of food, the complexity of ingredients, and the variability of food quality caused by the circulation environment, the application of Food packaging materials and technology has become very complex.
